Understanding YouTube Comment Moderation Options
Unlike Instagram and Facebook which let you hide individual comments, YouTube's hiding feature works differently. On YouTube, you can hide an entire user's comments from your channel, effectively shadow banning them. The hidden user can still post comments and see them on their end, but no other viewer can see their comments.
This approach is actually more powerful for dealing with persistent trolls or spammers. Instead of playing whack-a-mole deleting individual comments, you hide the user once and all their past and future comments become invisible to your audience.
For individual comment control, YouTube offers deletion and the Hold for Review feature. This guide covers all your options so you can choose the best approach for your moderation needs.
Method 1: Hide User from Channel (Shadow Ban)
This is the closest YouTube has to hiding comments. When you hide a user, all their comments across your entire channel become invisible to everyone except themselves.
Open YouTube Studio
Go to studio.youtube.com and sign in with your channel account. YouTube Studio is where all comment moderation happens.
Go to Comments
Click Comments in the left sidebar. This shows all comments across your channel, sorted by most recent. You can filter by Published, Held for review, or Likely spam.
Find the User's Comment
Locate any comment from the user you want to hide. You can use the search bar to find specific users or scroll through recent comments.
Click the Three Dots Menu
Hover over the comment to reveal the three vertical dots icon on the right side. Click it to open the options menu.
Select "Hide user from channel"
Click Hide user from channel. All comments from this user across all your videos will immediately become invisible to other viewers.
The user is not notified. From their perspective, their comments still appear normally. This is why it is often called a shadow ban.
Important Note
Hiding a user is channel-wide and permanent until you unhide them. It affects all past comments and all future comments. Use this for persistent trolls, spammers, or users who consistently violate your community standards.
Method 2: Hold Comments for Review
Instead of hiding comments after they appear, you can review comments before they go public. This gives you complete control but requires regular moderation.
Hold All Comments
- Go to YouTube Studio → Content
- Click the pencil icon on the video you want to moderate
- Scroll down and click Show More
- Under Comments, select Hold all comments for review
- Click Save
Comments will now appear in YouTube Studio → Comments → Held for review. You must manually approve each comment before it appears publicly.
Hold Potentially Inappropriate Comments
- In the same Comments dropdown, select Hold potentially inappropriate comments for review
- YouTube's AI will automatically hold suspicious comments while letting safe ones through
This is a good middle ground. Most comments appear immediately while problematic ones wait for your approval.
Method 3: Block Words to Auto-Hide Comments
Create a list of blocked words. Any comment containing these words will be automatically held for review instead of appearing publicly.
- Go to YouTube Studio → Settings (bottom left)
- Click Community in the left menu
- Find the Blocked words section
- Enter words or phrases separated by commas
- Click Save
Words to Consider Blocking:
- • Profanity and slurs
- • Competitor names (to stop promotion)
- • Common spam phrases like "check my channel"
- • Links (add "http" and "www" to block most URLs)
- • Specific words that attract trolls on your content
Method 4: Block Links and Hashtags
Spammers often post links to promote their content or scams. YouTube lets you automatically hold comments containing links or hashtags.
- Go to YouTube Studio → Settings → Community
- Find the Defaults tab
- Check Block links to hold comments with URLs
- Check Block hashtags if desired
- Click Save
Comments with links will be held for review. You can approve legitimate links from trusted commenters while blocking spam.
How to Unhide a User on YouTube
If you change your mind about a hidden user, you can restore their comments:
- Go to YouTube Studio → Settings
- Click Community
- Find the Hidden users section
- Click the X next to the user's name
- Click Save
All their comments will become visible again across your channel. Future comments will also appear normally.
When to Hide vs Delete vs Hold
| Situation | Best Action |
|---|---|
| Persistent troll or spammer | Hide user — One action stops all future issues |
| Single offensive comment | Delete — Remove it and move on |
| Controversial topic video | Hold all for review — Approve before publishing |
| Regular video, spam problem | Hold potentially inappropriate — AI catches most issues |
| Competitor promotion | Delete or hide user — Keep your channel clean |
| Legitimate criticism | Respond — Do not hide honest feedback |

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between hiding and deleting YouTube comments?
When you hide a user on YouTube, their comments become invisible to everyone except themselves. They can still post and see their own comments but no one else can. When you delete a comment, it is removed completely and the commenter knows it was deleted. Hiding is more discreet and prevents repeat offenders from knowing they have been moderated.
Can I hide individual comments on YouTube?
YouTube does not have a hide option for individual comments like Facebook and Instagram. Your options are to delete individual comments or hide the entire user from your channel. For preventive control, use the Hold for Review feature to approve comments before they appear publicly.
Does the user know when I hide them on YouTube?
No, YouTube does not notify users when they are hidden. From their perspective, their comments appear completely normal. They can see their own comments and will not realize others cannot see them. This is why hiding is often called shadow banning.
How do I unhide a user on YouTube?
Go to YouTube Studio → Settings → Community and find the Hidden users section. You will see a list of all users you have hidden. Click the X next to any name to unhide them. Their comments will become visible again across your channel.
Can I automatically hide comments with certain words?
Yes, though technically they are held for review rather than hidden. Go to YouTube Studio Settings → Community and add words to the Blocked words section. Comments containing these words will be automatically held for your review instead of appearing publicly.
Does hiding users affect my engagement metrics?
Hidden user comments still count in your total comment count. However, since other viewers cannot see them, they do not contribute to visible engagement or discussions. Your overall analytics remain accurate but visible engagement appears lower.
