How to Moderate Bluesky Comments and Replies (2026 Guide)

In Short
A quick read before you start.

“To moderate Bluesky comments, use the platform's built-in controls: set who can reply when you post, hide individual replies on your own posts, mute words and tags, block or mute accounts, and subscribe to moderation (labeler) services and mute lists. Because Bluesky is built on the open AT Protocol, much of its moderation is composable and account-level. For always-on, automated moderation that hides spam and harmful replies across your Bluesky posts and your other channels in seconds, FeedGuardians adds an AI layer on top of these native controls.

The Walkthrough

Step by step, in detail

01
Step 01 / 05

Set Who Can Reply When You Post

When composing a post, tap the reply-control option before publishing. Bluesky lets you choose who is allowed to reply: everybody, nobody, or a combination of followed users and mentioned users. Restricting replies on high-reach or sensitive posts is the simplest way to prevent pile-ons before they start.

Pro Tip

For announcements or launches that tend to attract spam, set replies to followed and mentioned users only, then loosen it once the post settles.

02
Step 02 / 05

Hide Individual Replies

On any reply to your own post, open the reply menu (the three dots) and choose Hide reply for everyone. Hidden replies are collapsed into a separate Hidden replies section rather than deleted, so the conversation stays visible to you but the harmful reply is removed from the main thread.

03
Step 03 / 05

Mute Words and Tags

Go to Settings → Moderation → Muted words & tags. Add spam phrases, scam terms, slurs, or competitor bait. You can choose whether a muted word applies to text and tags, and set it to mute permanently or for a set time. Muted content is filtered out of your view across feeds and notifications.

Pro Tip

Muting works per account and only affects what you see. It does not hide a reply from other users, so combine it with reply controls and hidden replies for posts you own.

04
Step 04 / 05

Block or Mute Accounts

On a problem account, open its profile menu and choose Mute account (silences them in your view) or Block account (prevents interaction and removes their replies from your threads). Blocking on Bluesky is public at the protocol level, which also discourages repeat offenders.

05
Step 05 / 05

Subscribe to Labelers and Moderation Lists

Bluesky supports independent labeling services (labelers) and shared moderation lists. In Settings → Moderation, subscribe to labelers that flag spam, scams, or harmful content, and subscribe to community-maintained mute or block lists to filter known bad actors at scale without managing every account yourself.

Watch Out

Labelers and lists are maintained by third parties. Review what each one filters before subscribing so you do not unintentionally hide legitimate accounts.

The Pitfalls

Mistakes to avoid

What we see go wrong most often — and how to sidestep each one.

01

Relying on muted words alone

Muted words only change what you see and only match exact text. Spammers dodge them with misspellings and emojis, and other users still see the replies. Combine muting with reply controls, hidden replies, and AI moderation.

02

Leaving replies open on high-reach posts

Viral or launch posts attract the most spam and scams. Set reply controls before posting rather than cleaning up afterward.

03

Subscribing to labelers without reviewing them

Labelers are third-party services with their own criteria. Check what each one filters so you do not hide legitimate accounts.

04

Treating Bluesky as low-risk

As Bluesky grows, scam and impersonation replies follow brands there too. The same moderation discipline you apply on Instagram belongs on Bluesky.

The Numbers

Why this matters

20%

of social comments are spam, bots, or abuse (Respondology, 2026)

The Questions

Readers always ask

Q.01

Can you hide replies on Bluesky?

Yes. On any reply to your own post, open the three-dot menu and choose "Hide reply for everyone." The reply is moved into a separate Hidden replies section rather than deleted, so it is removed from the main thread but still recoverable.

Q.02

How do you stop spam replies on Bluesky?

Use a layered approach: set reply controls when posting, mute spam words and tags in Settings, block repeat offenders, and subscribe to labelers and mute lists that filter known bad actors. For automated, real-time hiding at scale, FeedGuardians adds AI moderation on top of these native controls.

Q.03

What are Bluesky labelers?

Labelers are independent moderation services on the AT Protocol that label content (for example, as spam or harmful). You subscribe to the labelers you trust in Settings, and their labels can hide or warn on matching content in your view.

Q.04

Does muting a word on Bluesky hide it from everyone?

No. Muting only affects what you see. It does not remove the reply for other users. To remove a harmful reply from your post for everyone, use Hide reply, and to control who can respond at all, use reply settings when you post.

Q.05

Does FeedGuardians support Bluesky?

Yes. FeedGuardians moderates Bluesky alongside Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok, hiding spam, scams, and harmful replies automatically in real time and replying to genuine commenters in your brand voice.
