Detailed Walkthrough by Platform
Mobile Apps (iOS and Android)
I manage a page with around 400 comments daily. The mobile workflow is fastest when deleting under 50 comments. Here is the exact process.
Step 1: Navigate to the Post
Open your Facebook app. Go to your profile or page. Scroll to the post containing the comment you want to delete. Tap anywhere on the post to expand all comments.
Step 2: Find the Comment
Scroll through the comments section. Comments are ordered by Top or Most Recent depending on your view settings. You can switch views by tapping Top comments or Most recent above the comment field.
Why this matters: Facebook hides some comments under "View more comments" buttons. Tap these to expand hidden threads before you can delete nested replies.
Step 3: Access the Delete Menu
Locate the three dots icon to the right of the comment text, next to the timestamp like "2h" or "1d". Tap it. A menu appears with options like Hide comment, Delete, Turn off notifications for this post.
Step 4: Delete and Confirm
Tap Delete (or Delete comment on Android). A confirmation popup appears asking "Delete this comment?". Tap Delete again. The comment vanishes instantly. There is no undo.
Common Mistake: Tapping the Wrong Icon
The thumbs up icon and reply arrow are next to the three dots. Tapping those by accident likes the comment or opens the reply box. If you accidentally like, tap the thumbs up again to unlike.
Desktop Browser
Desktop deletion is slightly faster due to mouse precision. After deleting 127 spam comments in one session, I prefer desktop for bulk cleanup because the hover menus reveal instantly.
Step 1: Open Facebook and Find the Post
Go to facebook.com in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge. Navigate to your profile, page, or group. Click the post to expand it, or delete directly from your feed if comments are visible.
Step 2: Hover Over the Comment
Move your mouse cursor over the comment text. A three dots icon appears on the right side of the comment, next to Like and Reply. The icon only appears on hover, so keep your mouse steady.
Step 3: Click Three Dots and Select Delete
Click the three dots. A dropdown menu appears with options: Hide comment, Delete, Report, Turn off notifications. Click Delete.
Step 4: Confirm Deletion
A modal popup asks "Delete this comment?". Click Delete. The comment disappears immediately. No recovery is possible after you confirm.
💡 Edge Case: Deleting Nested Replies
If someone replies to a comment, you must delete each reply individually before deleting the parent comment. Facebook does not cascade delete replies when you remove the parent. Click "View previous replies" links to expose all nested comments first.
Bulk Actions and Automation
Facebook does not provide a select-all checkbox or bulk delete button. You must delete comments one by one, which becomes impractical above 100 comments. (Instagram has the same limitation, as explained in our bulk Instagram deletion guide.)
For high-volume deletion, tools like FeedGuardians connect to your Facebook Page via the official Meta API and let you filter comments by keyword, date, or user, then bulk delete in batches. This reduces 3 hours of manual work to 15 minutes.
| Method | Speed (100 comments) | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Manual Mobile | 45 minutes | Under 20 comments |
| Manual Desktop | 30 minutes | 20 to 50 comments |
| Automation Tool | 10 minutes | 50+ comments, recurring spam |
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Likely Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Delete option is grayed out | Not your post or comment | You can only delete comments on posts you own or comments you wrote. Use Hide instead. |
| Three dots menu not appearing | Browser cache or app bug | Clear cache, force quit app, or try desktop. Update Facebook app to latest version. |
| Comment reappears after deletion | Cache not refreshed | Hard refresh page (Ctrl+Shift+R) or close/reopen app. Wait 2 minutes for sync. |
| Cannot delete old comments | Archived or limited visibility | Check Activity Log. Archived posts can still have comments deleted via Activity Log. |
Policy and Limitations
Facebook imposes limits to prevent abuse and server overload. According to Facebook Help Center, these restrictions apply:
- You cannot delete comments on posts you do not own (exception: your own comments anywhere)
- You cannot bulk select or delete all comments with one action
- Deleted comments are permanently removed and cannot be recovered
- Deleting 200+ comments per hour may trigger temporary action blocks (manual or API)
- Commenters are not notified when you delete their comments
- On Pages, only admins and editors can delete comments
Pro Tips
- Hide instead of delete for temporary spam: Hidden comments can be restored later. Use this for borderline cases you want to review.
- Use keyword filters to find comments faster: Press Ctrl+F (or Cmd+F on Mac) and search for spam keywords like "click my link" before deleting.
- Delete from Activity Log for archived posts: Go to Settings → Activity Log → Comments. Filter by date and delete old comments in bulk view.
- Screenshot important comments before deletion: Once deleted, comments are gone forever. Save records for disputes or legal needs.
- Check comment moderation settings weekly: Enable automatic filters for profanity and spam phrases in Page Settings → General → Profanity Filter.
- Train your team on deletion permissions: Only Page admins and editors can delete comments. Moderators can hide but not delete.
- Use desktop for deleting 20+ comments: The hover menu is faster than mobile tapping. Keep one hand on mouse, one on keyboard for rapid workflow.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you delete all Facebook comments at once?
Facebook does not offer a native bulk delete feature. You must delete comments individually one by one, or use Meta-approved third-party tools that connect via the official Facebook API to perform batch deletions while respecting rate limits.
Can I delete someone else's comment on my Facebook post?
Yes. As the post owner, you can delete any comment on your posts, stories, or page content. Navigate to the comment, click the three dots menu, and select Delete. The commenter will not receive a notification when you delete their comment.
Will people know if I delete their Facebook comment?
Facebook does not send notifications when you delete someone's comment. However, the commenter may notice if they return to the post and see their comment missing. Comments you delete are permanently removed and the user can see they are gone.
Can I recover a deleted Facebook comment?
No. Deleted Facebook comments are permanently removed from Meta's servers and cannot be recovered. There is no trash folder or undo function. Screenshot important comments before deletion if you need records for customer service or legal purposes.
What is the difference between hiding and deleting a comment?
Hiding a comment makes it visible only to the commenter and their friends. You can unhide it later from Activity Log. Deleting permanently removes the comment for everyone and cannot be reversed. Use Hide for temporary moderation, Delete for permanent removal.
How do I delete comments on my Facebook Page?
The process is identical to personal profiles. Navigate to your Page, find the post, click three dots next to the comment, select Delete, and confirm. Only Page admins and editors have permission to delete comments. Moderators can hide comments but cannot delete them.
What Most Guides Miss
- Activity Log is the fastest way to delete old comments in bulk view: Go to Settings → Activity Log → Filter by Comments. You can see all your comments across all posts and delete them faster than scrolling through individual posts.
- Deleting a parent comment does NOT delete its replies: You must manually delete each reply before or after deleting the parent. This is different from how threading works in most platforms.
- Mobile app shows different menus on iOS vs Android: iOS shows "Delete" immediately while Android shows "Delete comment" with slightly different confirmation text. The function is identical but the wording differs.
