How to Moderate Threads Comments and Replies (2026 Guide)

In Short
A quick read before you start.

“To moderate replies on Threads, use the app's native controls: set who can reply when you post, filter replies with Hidden Words (custom and offensive-term filters), hide individual replies on your own posts, and mute, block, or restrict accounts. Because Threads is part of Meta, its Hidden Words settings work much like Instagram's. FeedGuardians does not yet support Threads, so use these native controls for Threads while FeedGuardians keeps your Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and Bluesky comments clean automatically.

The Walkthrough

Step by step, in detail

01
Step 01 / 04

Set Who Can Reply

When you create a thread, tap the reply-control option to choose who can reply: Anyone, Profiles you follow, or Mentioned only. Limiting replies on launches and sensitive posts is the fastest way to cut down on spam and pile-ons before they begin.

Pro Tip

You can change the reply audience after posting from the thread's menu if a post starts attracting unwanted replies.

02
Step 02 / 04

Turn On Hidden Words

Go to Settings → Privacy → Hidden Words. Turn on Hide replies to filter the default list of offensive terms, and add your own custom words, phrases, and emojis. Replies containing those terms are automatically moved out of view into a hidden section. Threads shares this system with Instagram, so you can align both.

Watch Out

Hidden Words only matches the exact terms you list. Spammers evade it with misspellings, spacing, and emojis, so treat it as a baseline rather than complete protection.

03
Step 03 / 04

Hide Individual Replies

On any reply to your own thread, tap the menu and choose Hide. The reply is removed from public view and grouped with other hidden replies, where you can review or unhide it later. Hiding does not notify the person who replied.

04
Step 04 / 04

Mute, Restrict, or Block Accounts

For a persistent problem account, open its profile menu. Mute removes them from your view, Restrict limits their interactions without alerting them, and Block prevents them from interacting with you at all. Restrict is useful for handling a difficult commenter without escalating.

The Pitfalls

Mistakes to avoid

What we see go wrong most often — and how to sidestep each one.

01

Treating Hidden Words as complete protection

Hidden Words is a keyword filter that misses misspellings, emojis, and scam links with no banned word. Use it as a baseline and combine it with reply controls and manual hiding.

02

Leaving replies open on every post

High-reach threads attract the most spam. Setting the reply audience before posting prevents most problems.

03

Forgetting Threads shares settings with Instagram

Your Instagram Hidden Words list and several safety settings carry over to Threads. Keep them aligned so both surfaces are protected.

04

Deleting instead of hiding

Hiding a reply removes it from public view without notifying the user, which avoids escalation. Reserve deletion and blocking for clear abuse.

The Numbers

Why this matters

20%

of social comments are spam, bots, or abuse (Respondology, 2026)

68%

of buyers read comments before they purchase

97%

47%

The Questions

Readers always ask

Q.01

Can you filter replies on Threads?

Yes. In Settings, Privacy, Hidden Words, turn on Hide replies to filter a default list of offensive terms and add your own custom words, phrases, and emojis. Matching replies are automatically moved into a hidden section.

Q.02

How do you hide a reply on Threads?

Open the menu on any reply to your own thread and choose Hide. The reply is removed from public view and grouped with other hidden replies, where you can review or unhide it. The person who replied is not notified.

Q.03

Do Threads and Instagram share moderation settings?

Largely yes. Threads is part of Meta and shares the Hidden Words system and several safety settings with Instagram, so keeping your Instagram filters up to date also helps protect your Threads replies.

Q.04

Does FeedGuardians moderate Threads?

Not yet. FeedGuardians currently automates comment moderation across Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and Bluesky. For Threads, use the native controls described above, and let FeedGuardians keep your other channels clean automatically in the meantime.

Q.05

What is the difference between mute, restrict, and block on Threads?

Mute hides an account from your view, Restrict quietly limits their interactions without notifying them, and Block prevents them from interacting with you entirely. Restrict is useful for de-escalating with a difficult commenter.
